Lectio 365

In early 2024, Pastor Casey Scott of Chapel Rock Christian Church introduced me to a resource that initially sparked my skepticism. As someone who prefers using scripture and a handwritten prayer journal, the idea of using a smartphone app for my daily devotions seemed unconventional. However, as the year progressed, my curiosity got the better of me, and I decided to explore Pastor Casey’s recommendation. To my surprise, the app turned out to be a valuable tool for spiritual growth.

The app he recommended is Lectio 365, and it’s designed to guide users through an adaptation of the ancient practice of Lectio Divina, or “Holy Reading.” A contemplative approach to Scripture, this practice engages the text through listening prayer and meditation. Lectio 365 offers concise, 15-20 minute sessions that make this practice accessible for daily use.

What is Lectio Divina?

Lectio Divina may be unfamiliar to some, but its core principles are rooted in a desire to connect deeply with God through His Word. The practice typically consists of four stages:

  • Lectio (Reading): This stage involves slowly and attentively reading a selected passage of Scripture.
  • Meditatio (Meditation): Here, we reflect on the text, pondering its meaning and how it relates to our lives.
  • Oratio (Prayer): We respond to the text through prayer, opening our hearts to God’s message.
  • Contemplatio (Contemplation): This final stage involves resting in God’s presence, allowing His Word to transform us.

Lectio 365 provides a structured P.R.A.Y. rhythm that is inspired by these stages. Each day offers a Scripture reading, a guided meditation, and prompts for prayer and contemplation following the P.R.A.Y. rhythm:

  • Pause to be still with God.
  • Rejoice with a Psalm and Reflect on Scripture.
  • Ask for God’s help
  • Yield to His will in your life.

This guided prayer session is designed to help you reflect on various aspects of your life as highlighted in Scripture as you prayerfully seek Jesus through that experience. Inspired by the centuries-old practice of Lectio Divina, Lectio 365 provides an accessible, digital adaptation of the ancient practice.

My Experience with Lectio 365

Over the past few weeks, I have engaged in the Lectio 365 prayer app, and it has brought me profound joy and spiritual nourishment. The daily readings, reflections, and prayers have helped me cultivate a deeper connection with my faith and a greater sense of intimacy with God. This practice has created a much-needed space for quiet contemplation amidst the busyness of everyday life. It has truly been a transformative experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in this enriching spiritual journey.

Initially, I was hesitant to embrace a digital tool for such a deeply personal practice. However, I discovered that Lectio 365 enhanced my experience of Lectio Divina in several ways. The app’s guided meditations helped me focus my thoughts and explore the meaning of the texts more deeply. The prayer prompts encouraged me to express my feelings and experiences to God in a more intentional manner. Additionally, the emphasis on contemplation fostered a sense of stillness and openness to God’s presence. The app’s convenience offers an easy and effective way to incorporate Lectio Divina into my daily routine.
